Often named the first male supermodel, David Gandy is instantly recognised for his work with Dolce & Gabbana fragrance advertisements as well as his work with well-known retail brands and from his covers of fashion magazines. His journey into modelling is a unique one, and he has fast established himself as one of the most famous male models of all time.Â
When was he discovered?
In 2001, David Gandy was a marketing student at the University of Gloucestershire when his friend, unbeknownst to David, entered him into ITV’s This Morning’s modelling competition. David ended up winning, landing himself a contract with UK agency Select Model Management.
Who did he sign with?
After winning the competition, he signed with Select Models, who are his mother agency. He is also signed with international model agencies such as Ford Models in New York, New Madison in Paris, Brave Model Management in Milan and LA Model Management to name but a few!
Who has he modelled for?
After signing with Select Model Management, David modelled for various brands until 2006, such as Zara and H&M, before landing himself the job that would throw him into the limelight. The iconic Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue fragrance advert, where he posed, reclining on a boat, wearing nothing but tight-fitted white underpants. This shot, catapulting him into the fashion hall of fame, appeared on a 50-foot billboard in Times Square, New York and has been iconic ever since. He has since collaborated with D&G on multiple occasions for many fashion campaigns and has previously been the face of the M&S Collection Menswear label.Â
This isn’t all. You may also have recognised him from prestigious magazine covers such as Vogue UK, GQ Australia and Prestige Hong Kong or from the closing ceremony at the 2012 Summer Olympics, where he walked, as the only male model alongside Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Jourdan Dunn, Lily Donaldson, Georgia May Jagger, Stella Tennant and Karen Elson on the catwalk, shaped like the Union Jack.
Has he collaborated with fashion brands?
So many, we can’t even tell you. As well as the recurring modelling contracts with the above brands, he has also modelled for Banana Republic, Hugo Boss, Russell & Bromley and Massimo Dutti – to name but a few.
Has he won awards?
David was titled the ‘Most Stylish Man’ at the GQ Awards in Australia, 2015. He has also won many other awards such as the Model of the Year award at the British Fashion Awards in 2010, as well as being named the world’s most sexiest man by People Magazine and GQ.
